The game

Drag the paddle, keep the ball alive, clear the bricks. Five stages, three lives, and some bricks take two hits.

Drag anywhere on the play area rather than directly on the paddle — on a phone this matters, because your thumb would otherwise cover the thing you need to see.

The one mechanic worth understanding

Where the ball hits the paddle determines where it goes. Not just left or right — the further from centre you make contact, the shallower the outgoing angle.

This is the whole game. A player who understands it is aiming; a player who does not is reacting, and reacting eventually fails because the ball speeds up.

  • Centre hit — steep return, ball comes back quickly. Safe but not useful.
  • Edge hit — shallow angle, ball travels sideways across the board. This is how you reach the corner bricks that are otherwise nearly impossible.
  • Deliberate edge hits are a skill worth practising, because the last few bricks of a stage are almost always in awkward places.

Strategy

  • Dig a channel up one side. If you can get the ball above the brick field, it bounces along the ceiling clearing rows by itself. This is the single highest-value play in any Breakout-style game.
  • Track the ball's destination, not the ball. Move to where it will arrive and wait there. Chasing it is how you end up half a paddle short.
  • Do not park in the centre. Centre is the safe default only if you plan to return the ball steeply, which does not clear corners.
  • Two-hit bricks first. Leaving them for the endgame means hunting a single tough brick with a fast ball, which is where lives get lost.
  • Slow down mentally when it speeds up. The ball gets faster; your movements should get smaller and earlier, not larger and later.

What it trains

Continuous visual-motor tracking with prediction — you are extrapolating a trajectory and positioning for a future state rather than responding to a current one. That is a different skill from the discrete reaction measured by the reaction time test, and people are often good at one and not the other.

It is also one of the few things here where practice produces a large, visible improvement fairly quickly, mostly because the angle mechanic is learnable rather than reflex-limited.

Q. The ball keeps getting stuck bouncing horizontally.
A. That happens when the angle gets too shallow. Take the next return closer to the paddle centre to steepen it again.

Q. Do later stages just get faster?
A. Layouts change too, and tougher bricks appear. Speed alone would only reward reflexes; the layouts are what require aiming.

Q. Does the paddle shrink?
A. No. Difficulty comes from ball speed and brick arrangement, so a stage lost is a stage you can genuinely learn.
