What this measures
Arithmetic against a clock, scored as correct − wrong. Four operations,
generated fresh every round so there is nothing to memorise.
It looks like a maths test but it mostly is not one. Beyond the basics, what limits you is processing speed and retrieval fluency — how quickly known facts come back — rather than mathematical ability. People who are excellent at maths and slow at this are entirely normal.
Why wrong answers subtract
Without a penalty the optimal strategy is tapping at random, which measures nothing. With one, you are forced onto the real trade-off: how certain do you need to be before you commit? That threshold is the interesting individual difference here, and it is the same decision you make under time pressure in any test.
Getting faster honestly
- Estimate before you calculate. Most multiple-choice options differ enough that an order-of-magnitude check eliminates two immediately.
- Check the last digit. For addition and multiplication, the units digit alone usually identifies the answer without doing the full sum.
- Round, then correct. 47 × 6 is 300 minus 18. Faster and less error-prone than column arithmetic.
- Division: think multiplication. "What times 7 gives 91?" is retrieved faster than a division is computed.
- Do not re-check a committed answer. The clock costs more than the occasional error does.
Reading your score
- Under 10 — usually hesitation rather than ability. Commit faster on the easy ones.
- 10–20 — typical range
- 20–30 — fast retrieval, good estimation habits
- Over 30 — you are recognising rather than calculating
If your accuracy is high but your count is low, the fix is confidence, not arithmetic. If your count is high but errors are eating it, slow down by a beat — at this scoring, one error cancels one correct answer entirely.

A. Sustained arithmetic is fatiguing in a way that feels disproportionate to the effort.
The late-round drop is normal and is itself a decent measure of concentration stamina.
Q. Are the questions the same every time?
A. No, they are generated each round, so repeated play does not reward memorisation.
