How it is scored

Flip cards two at a time and clear the board by finding every matching pair. Scoring rewards both speed and precision:

max(50, 1000 − seconds × 8 − wasted flips × 20)

So a wrong pair costs the same as two and a half seconds. Thinking before flipping is almost always worth it — which is the whole point of the game.

What it actually trains

Concentration, the card game most people know, is a decent test of visuospatial associative memory — binding what a card is to where it sits. Those are handled somewhat separately in the brain, and the game fails when the binding breaks, not when either half does.

You will notice this directly: you often know a particular symbol has appeared, and know roughly which region it was in, but cannot put the two together. That specific failure is the interesting part of the task.

Strategy that measurably helps

  • Open unexplored cards deliberately. Early on, information is worth more than matches. Two new cards teach you more than re-checking one you half-remember.
  • Say it, do not just see it. "Star, top-left" survives far better than a purely visual impression. Dual coding — visual plus verbal — is one of the most reliable memory findings there is.
  • Use the grid, not the pixels. Encode "row 2, third from left", not a vague location. Coordinates are chunkable; vague positions are not.
  • When you find a pair you cannot yet complete, clear it next. Holding a known pair in mind while exploring costs you working memory you need elsewhere.
  • Do not rush the end. Once most cards are known, the remaining flips should be near-perfect. Wasted flips at that stage are pure score loss.

Why it gets harder with age — and why that is fine

Associative memory declines earlier and faster than recognition memory. Older adults typically recognise that a card appeared about as well as anyone, but binding it to a location degrades. This is one of the most robust findings in cognitive ageing, and it is why this specific game feels harder over time while, say, vocabulary does not.

A. Not really — there is a hard floor of 50 and no ceiling other than clearing the board fast with zero waste. The realistic target is zero wasted flips; speed follows.

Q. Does luck matter?
A. On the first few flips, yes. After that it is almost entirely memory, since every flip you have seen is information you could be using.

Q. Does this improve my memory generally?
