What this measures

Numbers 1 to 9 scattered across a grid. Tap them in the order the current rule demands — ascending, descending, odd only, even only, or every third — and the rule changes between rounds without being announced as anything other than a new instruction. 45 seconds.

Two things are being measured at once: visual search (finding the next target among distractors) and rule maintenance (not reverting to the previous round's rule). The second is what makes it harder than it looks.

Scoring, and why it rewards finishing

Each correct tap gives +1, a completed round gives a +3 bonus, and a wrong tap costs −1. That bonus structure matters: abandoning a round part-way is a poor trade, because you forfeit the completion bonus you have already partly paid for.

It also means accuracy is worth more than raw speed. A round completed cleanly beats one rushed with two mistakes, even if the rushed one was faster.

Strategy

  • Locate the next two, not just the next one. While your finger travels to the current target, your eyes should already be finding the following one. This single habit is worth more than tapping faster.
  • Say the sequence, do not derive it. For "every third", knowing the run is 1-4-7 in advance removes arithmetic from the loop entirely. Same for odd and even.
  • Reset deliberately at each new rule. The most expensive errors are the first two taps of a round, applying the previous rule out of habit. Pause for half a beat and state the new rule to yourself.
  • Descending is harder than ascending for almost everyone, because the number line runs the other way to how you rehearse it. Expect to be slower and do not panic.
  • Do not hunt in a raster. Scanning left-to-right is slow. Let the target pop — single digits among few distractors are found peripherally.

Why assessments use this format

Sequential tapping tasks appear in cognitive hiring assessments because they are hard to game and produce a lot of signal in a short time — search efficiency, rule adherence, error recovery and sustained pace all show up in one 45-second run.

The pattern that gets noticed is usually the last of those. Most people start well and degrade; whether your final ten seconds resemble your first ten is a reasonable measure of concentration stamina.
