What this measures
Two shapes appear. You decide whether the second is the first rotated, or its mirror image. This is mental rotation, the task Roger Shepard and Jacqueline Metzler made famous in 1971.
Their finding is one of the most elegant results in cognitive psychology: the time people need scales linearly with the angle of rotation. Rotate a shape 40° in your head and it takes about twice as long as 20°. That linearity is strong evidence that people are doing something genuinely analogue — turning an image, not looking up a fact.
The mirror trap
Every pair here is generated so that the two shapes are chiral — a genuine mirror image that no amount of in-plane rotation can resolve. Shapes that happen to be symmetric are filtered out, because those would make the answer ambiguous.
This matters, because the fastest wrong strategy is comparing overall silhouette. A rotation and a reflection have the same silhouette. The only reliable signal is handedness: pick one distinctive feature and check which side it sits on relative to another.
Strategy
- Anchor on one feature, not the whole shape. Find the longest arm or an unusual corner and track only that. Rotating an entire figure mentally is slow and error-prone.
- Rotate the smaller angle. If the shape looks 270° off, turn it 90° the other way.
- Check chirality last. Align one feature first, then ask whether everything else lands where it should. If one arm is on the wrong side, it is a mirror.
- Trust the first impression on obvious pairs. Small rotations are usually resolved pre-consciously; deliberating adds time without accuracy.
- Errors cost points here — score is correct minus wrong — so guessing on a hard pair is a losing trade.
About the sex-difference claim
Mental rotation is the task most often cited for a male advantage in spatial ability, and the average difference is real in the literature. It is also frequently overstated. The distributions overlap heavily, the gap shrinks substantially with practice, and it varies a lot with how the task is presented. It tells you essentially nothing about any individual — including you.

Q. I am slow but accurate. Is that bad?
A. No. Speed and accuracy trade off, and being deliberate is a legitimate style. Since
wrong answers subtract, careful is often the higher-scoring approach here.
Q. Does this predict anything real?
A. Spatial ability correlates modestly with performance in some technical fields, but
"correlates modestly" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. It is not a career test.
Q. Can I get better at it?
A. Yes, and unusually so — mental rotation is one of the tasks where practice gains are
well documented and reasonably durable. Whether that transfers to anything else is the
usual open question.
