What this measures

The opponent shows a hand. An instruction tells you to win, lose or draw. Respond correctly, in 40 seconds, as many times as you can.

Winning is easy. Losing on purpose is the hard part, and that is the whole design. Rock-paper-scissors is overlearned — the winning response is nearly automatic — so being told to lose forces you to suppress it and compute a different answer. This is inhibitory control plus rule application, under time pressure.

Why "lose" is so much harder than "win"

Because you have played this game since childhood and the winning move is retrieved, not calculated. When the instruction says lose, two things happen: the automatic answer arrives first and has to be blocked, and only then can the correct one be worked out.

You can feel both steps. The hesitation on "lose" trials is the suppression; the extra beat after it is the computation. "Draw" sits in between — it has no automatic competitor, but it also has no shortcut.

Strategy

  • Read the instruction before the hand. Most errors come from seeing the opponent's hand first, generating the winning answer, and then having to unwind it.
  • Learn the two shifts as positions, not as reasoning. Think of the three hands in a fixed cycle. Winning is one step around it; losing is one step the other way. Converting it to a spatial habit removes the computation entirely.
  • Do not verbalise. "Rock beats scissors, so to lose against rock I need…" is far too slow. This has to become a reflex.
  • Errors subtract, so a steady accurate rhythm beats bursts of speed.
  • Reset after a mistake. The error itself costs one point; the flustered three that follow cost three more.

Why assessments use it

Conditional-response tasks like this appear in cognitive hiring assessments because they measure something specific and hard to fake: can you follow an instruction that contradicts your habit, quickly, repeatedly, without drifting back?

The characteristic drift is what gets noticed. People start accurate, then partway through begin answering "win" on lose trials without realising — the automatic response reasserting itself as attention fatigues. Sustaining the rule is the skill, not knowing it.

Frequently asked

Q. I keep getting "lose" wrong specifically.
A. Expected, and it is the finding. If you are equally accurate on all three instructions, you have converted the task into a lookup rather than a suppression — which is a legitimate and effective strategy.

Q. Does it get easier with practice?
A. Yes, substantially, because you replace suppression with a learned mapping. That is also why the score is more about the strategy you found than about raw inhibition.

Q. Is the opponent's hand random?
A. Yes, and so is the instruction. There is no pattern to exploit.
